Just like selecting a physician, selecting a compounding pharmacy that meets your specific needs is important. When you initially contact a compounding pharmacy, you may want to ask them for the following information:
Does the pharmacy use PCCA-tested Formulas and Pharmaceutical Ingredients?
What initial training is required for the pharmacy staff members when they begin working there?
What ongoing education do staff members receive? Do they participate in formal continuing compounding education programs?
Does the pharmacy have a quality assurance and continuous quality improvement program? Does the pharmacy have its compounded preparations tested for potency to ensure you are getting the right amount of medication? Do they test their sterile preparations to ensure sterility? Ask for details.
Is the pharmacy PCAB accredited, the highest accreditation possible for a compounding pharmacy?
How are patients educated on the appropriate use of their compounded prescriptions? Does their clinical staff spend time answering their questions in a professional, compassionate manner?
How long has the pharmacy been in business? Are they a totally dedicated compounding facility that specializes in compounding only or do they also provide other types of pharmacy services?
These are great questions to help you get started finding the perfect pharmacy for your needs!
